Hey there, future entrepreneurs!
Are you thinking of starting your own online business but can’t make up your mind?
Well, what are some reasons to start an online business that will make you take the plunge?
When you know, my guess is you’ll probably say, “Why haven’t I started yet?”
There’s never been a better time to start an online business.
And it can be one of the best decisions you’ll ever make.
So, what are you waiting for?
Let’s dive in and explore 17 good reasons to start an online business, so you can decide if it’s best for you.
Good Reasons to Start an Online Business Today
When I started my Amazon FBA business (my very first online business), I never knew I would learn so many things that would ultimately help me decide what I really wanted and allow me to try other online ventures.
Here are some reasons that are my favorite.
1. Low barrier to entry & easy for beginners to start
All you really need to start an online business is the internet, a computer, and a great idea, which makes it easy for anyone to start.
There’s no physical space to rent, equipment and furniture to buy, or any cost that is typically associated with having a physical business.
E-commerce and online businesses have been a game changer, especially since there are user-friendly online store builders that don’t require technical knowledge to use.
Really, you don’t need any special or technical skills to start, so anyone can start immediately.
You can use Google or YouTube to learn all you need to know. Sometimes special or paid training is not even required. So, you can start an online business all by yourself.
2. You can start immediately
One good thing about some online businesses is how easy it is to start immediately.
Depending on what your business idea is, you can start right now.
For instance, if you’re interested in selling t-shirts with motivational quotes or funny sayings, you can register with Spring and start selling your designs, which will be live immediately.
And you don’t even have to worry about having no design experience because, with Canva’s easy-to-use platform and templates, you can create some cool designs.
So, there’s no need to wait for the stars to align; you can turn your ideas into reality in no time.
3. Low startup costs
I think you’d agree that, depending on the type of business, setting up a physical business comes with many costs, like paying rent, buying office furniture and equipment, paying utilities, etc.
Now imagine setting up a blog or an online store from the comfort of your home or from a tropical island while on vacation. The cost to set up would be much lower and require less investment.
In fact, in some cases, you can start without even spending a dime.
I started my print-on-demand t-shirt business side hustle (Amazon Merch and Spring) with $0. I was able to make sales without even spending any money to promote my products.
So, no need to take a huge loan or drain your savings account. You can test the waters with a minimal initial investment.
4. You have the job you want by creating it yourself
Why work at a job you hate when you can create one you love?
As an online entrepreneur, you can create your dream job by having the autonomy to shape your role based on your passion, skills, and vision.
Life is too short. Why not do what you love and what makes you happy?
5. Following your passion
What’s better than combining work and play?
If you love what you do, chances are you’ll give it your all to make your business successful.
Whether it’s offering virtual yoga classes or selling your art online, you have the freedom to build a business around what you love.
Of course, you’d want to ensure that your hobbies or passions can make money, especially if you’d like to replace your 9 to 5 with your online job. So always validate your idea first.
6. You learn new skills
When you’re just starting your new online business, chances are you must learn and do everything on your own.
The advantage is that you get to learn many skills. From time management to email marketing or graphic design, the possibilities are endless.
You can even use these skills to make additional money by providing them as a separate service. For example, if you have a blog, you can work as a freelancer, offering to write blog articles, or as a social media manager.
You’ll gain skills that will not only be beneficial for your business but also contribute to your personal growth.
7. There’s more freedom and flexibility
From my experience, freedom and flexibility are two of the biggest advantages of having an online business.
You get to decide when to work and how to manage your business around other important events in your life.
As your own boss, you don’t have to ask for time off or wait for your vacation to be approved. You get to choose when and where you work.
Also, since your business is online, there are no opening and closing hours, making your goods and services accessible to everyone even while you sleep.
Depending on the type of online business you choose, you can say goodbye to rigid schedules and hello to freedom.
Note: While you can work whatever hour or day that pleases you, that doesn’t mean you should slack off. Also, when you’re just starting out, you’d need to put in the hours if you want to have a sustainable business.
8. No geographical restrictions
Your business resides on the internet, so you’ll be location independent. You’ll be able to conduct business from anywhere in the world without being tied to one place or country.
Imagine traveling and taking client calls from your hotel room, a co-working space, or a beautiful beach.
Also, depending on your type of business, your products and services can be available to everyone from all over the world.
9. You’re open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year
There’s no closed sign with an online business.
You’re able to serve and provide value to your customers every day, whether you’re asleep or in another time zone or country.
So, imagine the money you’ll make if your business is accessible all hours every day of the year.
10. Diverse revenue streams
A great benefit to having an online business?
There are multiple ways to make money.
Say you have a blog and you’re selling products or services. You can also make additional money by:
- Monetizing your content through ads or affiliate marketing
- Partnering with brands
- Setting up a paid newsletter
So, depending on the type of online business you set up, apart from your main offering, there are other ways you can make money.
I can’t see you saying no to this.
11. You make money while you sleep
Passive income?
Yes, please.
Because who wouldn’t want to make money while they sleep?
One of the best ways to earn money online is to build a passive income stream.
Some online businesses that are great passive income ideas include:
- Selling online courses
- Blogging
- Selling digital products
- Online stores
- Print-on-demand stores.
With these ideas, you can make money while catching your beauty sleep.
12. Work-life balance
Work-life balance is important for your overall health and well-being.
It’s that balance between managing your business or work life and your personal life so that you don’t feel overwhelmed or overworked.
When you’re an online business owner, you get to control what you prioritize or focus on, therefore allowing you to purposefully control what impacts you.
You can better create harmony between your business life and your home or personal life since you are essentially the boss.
Also, since you work from home or basically anywhere you choose to, there’s no long commute or traffic to deal with, giving you more time to spend with family and friends.
However, as an entrepreneur, you can find yourself constantly working, and you can forget to take time for yourself and may neglect other important aspects of your life. But with the flexibility an online business affords, you can, with proper time management, achieve a healthy work-life balance.
Imagine getting to decide when exactly you work and for how long, so that you can go out and have fun with family and friends.
13. You can focus on what really matters
When you’re your own boss, you can focus your time and energy on the tasks that truly matter to your business’s growth.
Apart from the business side of things, you also get to determine when you take a break so you can spend quality time with your family, focus on your mental health, or practice self-care.
Imagine having the control to decide what exactly you focus your energy on.
14. You can have more job security
With an online business, you’re less likely to face layoffs or job losses.
You have control over your career and income, which provides you with a sense of security.
However, depending on the type of online business you venture into, one might have more risk than the other. For example, a service-based online business might be less risky than an online business that involves manufacturing and selling products. Also, some types of online businesses might be impacted by an economic downturn.
Notwithstanding this, you control how much you make based on the effort you put in and if you treat it as a business instead of just a hobby. This, in turn, can result in more money and financial freedom.
Also, with an online business, you learn many skills, so if your business fails, you will have acquired additional skills that you can apply to another venture or career.
15. You create jobs
As your online business grows, you’ll be able to expand and hire additional help.
You could be providing jobs to freelancers such as writers or graphic designers, or you could even hire full-time employees such as a virtual assistant or a social media manager.
Providing jobs helps you contribute to the economy. You’d also be making a positive impact in your community.
16. Feeling confident and proud of yourself
Imagine challenging yourself to go outside your comfort zone to create something you’re either passionate about or to accomplish a goal.
You’ll feel a sense of pride and accomplishment. Your self-confidence grows, and that is one of the best things in life.
Even if your online business is a side hustle earning just a few dollars a month, you’ll feel good knowing that you’re chasing your dreams and helping others.
17. You’ll better understand if being an entrepreneur or working a 9 to 5 is best for you
From my experience of having an online business and working a 9 to 5, I can say that having determined what I really want, an online business is best for me because of the flexibility it affords.
However, it doesn’t mean that working a 9-5 is bad, as it can help you start your journey to becoming an online entrepreneur.
If you work full-time, you can start an online side hustle while earning a full-time income. That way, you get to test if an online business or a 9-5 is best for you. You can also fund your online side hustle with money set aside from your full-time income.
In the early stages of having an online business, you might not have instant success and might be tempted to give up, but the beauty of having a 9 to 5 is that you get to have a steady income while chasing your dream of becoming an online entrepreneur and testing the waters.
Having tried the two, you’ll also know your strengths, weaknesses, preferences, and work style.
The key is to get clear on your goals, purpose, and what you want and bravely pursue them.
